Mr. Andrew Sakala, retired Airforce pilot from Zambia who had 2 previous unsuccessful spine surgeries overseas presented with infected failed back surgery syndrome. He was incapacitated with pain, loss of function and inability to walk. He underwent 2- stage, 360 degrees back and front revision spine surgery at Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda.
First stage involved removal of previous infected implants, thorough debridement, decompression and extended fusion with cemented reimplantation of screws. Second stage involved anterior retroperitoneal lumbar decompression and tricortical iliac crest (autograft) anterior strut fusion to achieve anterior stability. He had 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics following surgery.
